With Different Variations, Rummy is Among the Oldest Card Games and Still the Most Popular

Rummy is among the oldest card games that has been a part of the Indian traditions from a long time. From weddings to festivals, a game of rummy is always considered auspicious and good. But rummy card game is much older than its popularity in India. Check out these different types of 13 card game and what makes it among the most interesting card games today.

There are seven different rummy variations that are popularly played. Even with the different variations of the game, the rules more or less remain the same. Here are the seven variations of the rummy card game.

Contract: This is among the most commonly played rummy version. In this game, a series of 5 to 7 hands are dealt. The trick is that each hand has its own set of rules that decide how to score points in the game. For example, one deal may require the player to have one set and one run and another deal may require 2 sets and 2 sequences. This rummy variant is played by 3 to 8 players and decks are selected as per the number of players.

500 RUM or Pinochle:  This is a points rummy game with each player getting 13 cards. Points are calculated for melded combinations and the player who reaches 500 points wins the game. The other rummy rules remain more and less the same.

Double Rummy: This rummy variant is quite different as compared to the other ones. For this game, 106 cards are used with only 2 Jokers used out of the 4 available.  The number of cards dealt are fixed to 10 and the scoring pattern remains the same. However, the value of Ace is 11 and the Joker is 15 points in this game.

Knock: This variant is played with 2 to 5 players. If there’re 4 players playing the game, then only 1 deck is used. With 5 or more players, 2 decks are used. The scoring in this game is a bit different. The player with the lowest points is the winner. In this game, Ace is one point and face cards are 10 points, while the numbered cards are counted as per the number.

Continental: This is a rummy variant that is played with 2 to 12 players. The number of decks used depends on the players in the game. If there’re 3-4 players then 2 decks are used and if 5-6 players, then 3 card decks are used. Each player here is dealt with 15 cards in sets of three and to win one needs to form sets and sequences of all card. The player who declares first with the least point is the winner.

Kalookie rummy: This variant is also called Kaluki or Kalooki and is played with 2 to 4 players. In this 108 cards are used with 2 decks and four additional Jokers. Each player is dealt 15 cards. If there’re 5 players, then 13 cards are dealt and if there’re 6 then 11 cards are given.  Here the Ace is 15 points and face cards are 10 points, while the numbered cards are as per their face value. A Joker when used in a set or sequence has the same value as the card it is used for. However, if a Joker remains in the hand, then it equals 25 points. To declare, the player must have 51 points are more.

Also, a player cannot do this unless he or she has made their first combination.

Panguingue (Pan): This is a unique rummy variant with eight decks of 40 cards are used. But, the 8s, 9s, and 10s are removed from the decks. Each player gets 10 cards at the beginning of the game. The aim of the game is to meld all 10 cards by making sets or sequences. Further, a drawn card must be melded or discarded, but it can’t remain in the player’s hand. This game is played in large groups with up to 15 players.

Is rummy playing legal?

Even though the history of rummy goes way back and there are different variations enjoyed, one question that always bothers players is whether rummy playing is legal or not. The answer is, rummy card game is completely legal. All variants of rummy require strategy and skills and there is no gambling or ‘luck’ involved anywhere.
